Promotion in a grocery store?
I'm sixteen years old and have been working at this grocery store for over a year now. Of course, I started out as a courtesy clerk (bagging, pushing carts, and basically doing whatever I was told to) and thought I did pretty well at what i did. Our front end supervisor would always compliment me on my work and a few months ago opened up into making me a cashier. Well enough I started training and did so on and off for a week or so, made good progress in my learning. Afterwords I heard nothing. I would try and confront my boss about my training and when it would start up again but have had no success so far. Two months later and I'm obviously upset that they totally pulled a "just-kidding" on me. I put alot in what i did in the workplace and felt like I was treated very unfairly. My feelings start showing up in my work. Do I have a reason to be upset and what should I do about this?

Just keep asking. Perhaps she doesn't think you're serious? It costs time and money to train someone and no employer will want to invest that if the employee isn't serious. You need to show, not just by asking when you're bored, that you're serious. Actually talk to her, TELL her you are serious and very interested and ask her if there is room for you to be promoted. Ask if there's anything that is preventing you from continuing your training. There may be something going on that you're not aware of.

I know that in our state, checkers can not scan alcohol (beer, wine, etc) unless they are 21 years of age. For that reason, the store I worked in in college would not hire or promote anyone to a checker position until they were 21. Perhaps this is an issue?

Keep asking. Show that you are serious. Tell her that you are serious. Follow up.

Good luck!

keep pushing. really. just keep bugging him about it, and youll eventually get it. dont start slipping at your workcause then theyll say "well youve been doing __ and __" when you ask about being moved up, and theyll use that against you!

The first question I have is this: have other cashiers been hired since your training was interrupted? If not, the hiatus in your training has nothing to do with you. Most likely the recession has put additional stresses on profit. Wage expense is the first place to put controls in. Promotions would be postponed and hours would be cut back. It would only take a 5% drop in business to make this necessary and that's not a level that you would notice in your position.

If, however, others are getting promotions to cashier and you've been left behind, there is a reason for it. You can ask to speak to your supervisor in private regarding any shortfalls in your performance -- or the perception of shortfalls and you should bring with you the attitude that you're willing to do anything to improve. If the hiatus is for a reason beyond your control, the chances are that they'll tell you honestly at that time.

Whatever the reason for the hiatus, business people don't pull a "just kidding." They don't have the time for games. So be sure to drop that thought.

Your hurt feelings have no place being exhibited at work and will only change any favorable opinion of you. Work is a place for maturity and professionalism.
