Would I be allowed to do this as a nurse?
I keep reading about the "crappy side" of nursing. It's mainly the nurses who should have left the profession long ago doing the complaining, but that's a different issue.

One of the complaints about nursing was that you don't have enough time to eat or take a break.

Would I be allowed to wear scrubs with pockets and keep them filled with snacks like peanuts, crackers, fruit pieces, or something like that so I won't starve?

I love the idea of helping people, but I'm the type of person who gets a little crabby if I haven't eaten in a while, and I don't want to be one of those nurses that take my frustrations out on everyone around me.

Are you kidding? My scrub jacket is stuffed with food. Even if I have to run through the nurse's station choking down a pepsi and shoving chips in my mouth, I make sure I eat! If we don't get to sit down for at least 15 minutes without having to watch a fetal monitor, it's considered a "no break" and we get paid for it. So often, by the time OB staff can go eat, the cafeteria is closed, so our unit secretaries or patient care techs will run out and get food (and we all chip in and buy hers!).

Yeah. Many nurses have lots of snack foods (granola bars, fruit, nuts, and some less healthier choices) at their station or in their pockets.
It also depends on the facility you work at whether or not you actually have time for a break. The nursing home I am doing my preceptor at, the nurses have time for their lunch breaks.

Edit: It's normal for people to be "crabby" if they don't eat for a while. It's a classic symptom of hypoglycemia--low blood sugar.

YOu should have a break room on the floor with a refrigerator and some sort of locker or cubby hole to store your belongings. I usually kept some sort of snack food in my purse such as crackers. There are slow days when you will get a full 30 minute lunch and hectic days when you get 5-10 minutes to grab a snack.
